Story scrambles, craft workshops, painting sessions and drawing lessons are some of the activities on offer these school holidays at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi – the Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre.
This year’s October school holidays coincide with the BirdsaPlenty Festival, so Te Kōputu is showing its support with some bird-themed activities. All the activities are free and open to the community with fun activity sheets also available throughout the holidays from the front desk at Te Kōputu.
The programme kicks off from 10 am to 12 pm on Tuesday, 1 October in the Sheaff Family Gallery with a workshop led by award-winning local artist, Mandy Hague. Aimed at five to eight year-olds, this free workshop will explore creativity with paper, card and crayon, all of which is provided.
Two activities will be on offer on Thursday, 3 October with Feathered Friends from 10:30 am – 11:30 am in the Little Orchard Activity Room, and a drawing workshop from 1 pm to 3 pm in the Sheaff Family Gallery. Feathered Friends is a fun activity for all ages where participants will create a fantastical paper Kererū (native wood pigeon) or Tīwakawaka (fantail). Participants in the drawing workshop, which is aimed at nine to 13 year-olds, will have fun learning basic drawing techniques with artist Mandy Hague. No need to bring anything, as all materials will be supplied for these two workshops.
For fun, read-aloud stories for children of all ages, head along to Story Scramble from 10:30 am – 11:30 am in the Little Orchard Activity Room on Friday, 4 October and Friday, 11 October.
