Story scrambles, craft workshops, painting sessions and drawing lessons are some of the activities on offer these school holidays at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi – the Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre.

This year’s October school holidays coincide with the BirdsaPlenty Festival, so Te Kōputu is showing its support with some bird-themed activities. All the activities are free and open to the community with fun activity sheets also available throughout the holidays from the front desk at Te Kōputu.

Swimmers keen to develop and improve their stroke skills are invited to participate in a technique training session at the Whakatāne Aquatic and Fitness Centre during the school holidays. Two one-hour sessions will be offered to swimmers at 8:30 am and 12:30 pm on Thursday, 3 October 2013, with participation costing just $5.00.

The removal of most of the female ginkgo trees in Jubilee Crescent begins this week, following consultation with residents during the past year. The trees, which have affected residents largely through the offensive odours they emit, will be felled by Alfa Contracts Ltd as part of an active management programme.

Postal voting papers for the local government elections and Whakatāne’s fluoride referendum will be mailed from today and should be received by all registered voters by Wednesday, 25 September. 

Postal votes can be made as soon as the papers are received, with voting open till midday on Saturday, 12 October.

Andrew Irving, the architect responsible for the multi-award winning design of Te Kōputu, the Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre, will give a free public talk on Thursday, 19 September.

This talk is part of the public programmes supporting the new Objects of Desire Exhibition in the Opus Gallery.

The talk will take place 5:30 pm Thursday, 19 September in the Little Orchard Activity Room at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi. Everyone is welcome to attend.

An iPad is up for grabs in an Eastern Bay of Plenty Road Safety competition launched this week.

The Share the Road competition, being run via Facebook over the next month, invites people to make the road a safer place in six seconds by creating a short video showcasing what road safety in the Eastern Bay means to them.

The six-second videos can be created through the Vine mobile app.

New Zealand Airports Association asks that candidates for this year’s local body elections remember their local airport is vital for economic growth in their region.

Association Chief Executive Kevin Ward says, “Airports are important for local communities, connecting New Zealanders and local businesses to the rest of the country and to the world. They provide essential services to local businesses and industries, tourism, special events and the health sector. Airports are also a major lifeline for disaster recovery and emergency services.”

Whakatāne has had 1800 hours of sunshine through 31 August, putting it well ahead of all other contenders in the sunshine race.

An additional 170 hours of sunshine during August helped Whakatāne maintain its lead over New Plymouth, which has had 94 fewer hours of sun than Whakatāne this year.

The sunshine hour totals through 31 August 2013 are:

  • Whakatāne: 1800
  • New Plymouth: 1706
  • Blenheim: 1605
  • Lake Tekapo: 1591
  • Nelson: 1568

The Whakatāne District Council’s Projects and Services Committee has recommended that Chief Executive Marty Grenfell be given the delegated authority to make a submission to its proposed District Plan seeking the introduction of a “deferred marine precinct” zoning for Council-owned land on Bunyan Road.

A new roundabout taking shape at the SH2 and SH33 intersection near Paengaroa should reduce crash risks to drivers, according to NZTA. This intersection was confirmed as one of the most dangerous intersections in the Bay of Plenty earlier in 2013.

Most crashes at this intersection have been caused by drivers failing to stop and check that the intersection is clear. The Paengaroa roundabout has been designed to reduce this risk when it opens next year.

Recent media coverage of the moorings situation in the Eastern Bay of Plenty has prompted the Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Whakatāne District Council to clarify the roles and responsibilities of both organisations and remind mooring-holders of their individual obligations.

The Whakatāne District Council’s Harbour Superintendent is responsible for day-to-day operational maintenance of the Whakatāne District Ports and Harbour facilities, including wharfs, jetties and boat ramps.

The establishment of an air training satellite base at Whakatāne Airport will not proceed in the foreseeable future.

CTC Aviation Training (NZ) Limited, a Hamilton-based pilot training school, and the Whakatāne District Council have undertaken a joint study into the feasibility of establishing a satellite training facility at the town’s airport. While the outcomes of that process were largely positive, CTC’s UK-based Board of Directors has decided not to proceed with the development at this stage.

Samantha Duff from Murupara Area School has been named as the winner of the TrustPower Whakatāne District Youth Spirit Community Award.

The Award was presented at the TrustPower Whakatāne District Community Awards Tuesday, 27th August) at the Little Theatre in Whakatāne.

Run in conjunction with the TrustPower Whakatāne District Community Awards, the TrustPower Youth Community Award recognises secondary school students’ service to the school and the community. The Award is jointly run by TrustPower and the Whakatāne District Council.

In preparation for the centenary of World War I, the Whakatāne District Museum has started a NZ Lottery Grants Board-funded project to digitise the museum and community photographic and archival collections relating to “The Great War”.

The first of five opportunities for members of the public to have their material digitised – photographed and stored on DVD or memory stick - will be held at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi – The Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre on Friday, 30 August and Saturday, 31 August 2013.

A second rating surplus in successive years will help the Whakatāne District Council keep rates costs down in 2014/15. In a report to the Council’s Audit committee on Wednesday, Acting General Manager Finance Philip Jones described the surplus of close to $43,000 for the 2012/13 financial year as an “important achievement”.

GNS volcanologists have analysed the activity at White Island following the 20 August eruption and have lowered the Volcanic Alert Level.

"The level of volcanic activity at White Island has decreased substantially since yesterday’s eruption," GNS reports. "Steam and gas continue to be emitted from the active crater, in a similar fashion to that prior to the eruption."

Weather permitting, GNS plans to fly around White Island on Friday to take airborne measurements of volcanic gas emissions.
