Stages and Marquees at an event

Use of temporary structures at an event

Temporary structures (e.g. marquees and staging) that are larger than 100 square metres in floor area or higher than 1.5 metres off the ground require a building consent.

These structures require a ‘simple building consent’. As part of your building consent application you are required to provide the following information:

  • A site plan showing the location of the marquee to the nearest two legal boundaries and other buildings on site
  • A floor plan showing the layout of the marquee seating arrangements etc. A minimum of two exits must be shown (exits must have clear egress)
  • Name/s of designated safety officer/s who are responsible for ensuring the safe and speedy exit of all people attending the event

Ground penetrations

Before any ground penetration (for example tent pegs, activities during the event or pack-in and pack-out that may penetrate the ground) it’s your responsibility to ensure underground services such as electrical cables, gas lines, water pipes have been properly located. See "Before you Dig" and speak to Whakatāne Regional Council about the Hazardous Activities and Industries List (HAIL) for further information.

It is important to obtain written consent from the landowner before performing these operations.
