We have a number of projects completed or underway as part of our Climate Change Project, our case studies will highlight the results and provide further information.

Neil at the Braemar Pump StationNew high efficiency supply pumps significantly reduce electricity use

In 2020, Whakatāne District Council installed new, higher-efficiency pumps at two pump stations. As a result, the Council is on track to reduce electricity use by 157,000 kWh, and carbon emissions by 16,500 kgCO2e annually, saving $22,000 per year.

Whakatāne District Council has developed a process for packaging and sending physical files to storage that eliminates the use of plastic wrap, and exclusively uses reusable materials. More than 2,360 metres of plastic have been saved as a result.

Aquatic Centre Team outside of pools Aquatic Centre saves 114 tonnes of carbon emissions in 12 months

Whakatāne District Council has prioritised the use of heat pumps over natural gas boilers by optimising water heating trends. Annual carbon emissions have reduced by 114 tonnes as a result.

Building off their great success, the team at the Aquatic Centre is looking at ways to further reduce energy use. Options are currently being evaluated for replacing their gas boilers with greener alternatives.
